body doubling: a gentle way to begin a hard task

Two people sit at the same table in soft daylight, each quietly writing in their own notebook. Photo: Monstera Production / Pexels.

some tasks aren’t hard to do.
they’re hard to start.

you sit down. you know what needs to happen. the file is open. the deadline is somewhere in your head. and still… nothing.

that space between knowing and doing can feel surprisingly big. some people call it task paralysis. it can happen with ADHD, but honestly, you don’t need a diagnosis to know the feeling.

sometimes you just need someone there.

why body doubling can help

body doubling is simple. you work on your own task while another person is nearby, either in the same room or on a video call. they work on theirs. you work on yours.

that’s it.

they don’t check your work. they don’t tell you what to do. their presence simply makes the moment feel a little less empty.

and somehow, that can make starting easier.

there is a quiet kind of accountability too. not the stressful kind. more like… someone is here, so maybe I’ll stay here too.

for some people, that’s enough to get through the first ten minutes.

and sometimes the first ten minutes are the hardest part.

when no one is around

of course, you can’t always find a body double.

maybe it’s late. maybe your friends are busy. maybe you don’t feel like explaining why you need someone to sit quietly with you while you answer emails.

so, some people create a similar feeling in other ways.

a coffee shop recording. a quiet focus stream. a video of someone studying nearby.

it isn’t quite the same as having another person in the room. but perhaps that’s not the point.

maybe what helps is simply a small reminder that this is a place where things are happening.

a little sound can help, too

that’s one reason I made 5fifi flow.

it’s a small, free app that plays a soft mechanical keyboard sound as you type. it isn’t a person, and it doesn’t try to be one.

it just gives your own typing a little sound.

the room feels less silent. your hands make the rhythm. and when you stop typing, the sound stops too.

it won’t replace a real body double. but on a quiet night when you just need a little company, it might be enough.

sometimes starting doesn’t need more pressure.

maybe it just needs a little less emptiness.

whatever kind of day this has been,

it's fine...take your time... one small step is enough. šŸ¤Ž
